One of the best days of my journey was when I was in Burma and President Barack Obama came to speak at the University of Yangon. Like so many of my experiences trailing back into my father’s life, this one had remarkable parallels which the universe must have had a role in.
Back in 1953, the only other sitting Vice President or President of the United States to ever have visited the country was Richard Nixon who stopped into Rangoon for a couple of days and actually did an impromptu press conference from my father’s office at The Burma America Institute on 35th Street in downtown Rangoon.
The local press published an unintentionally humorous headline perhaps the next day – copies of which I found in my father’s papers.
Aung San Sui Kyi is now the de facto President of Burma – and of course, then Secretary Clinton looks like she too will soon be President as well.
